The 2025 Midwest High School Girls Rugby tournament takes place April 26th-27th, 2025 at the Moose Rugby Grounds in Elkhart, Indiana.
The event began 26 years ago. Initially it was a rotating championship featuring states taking turns hosting. Having now been centralized for many years in order to boost attendance and ease planning, the 2025 iteration of the event will see six teams test themselves against top-flight but not selectside girls high school programs.
From Wisconsin, DSHA HS and Catholic Memorial HS (both single-school programs with stable coaching staffs and stable playing numbers) will compete against a rising Westside Indiana team; the long-running Carrol Chargers also of Indiana; and St Joseph's Academy, another long-time staple and single school team from Ohio. The teams in this competition are single school or at least single-community programs. Both CMH and DSHA will play Westside instead of following the typical bracket style tournament seen in recent years. It's note-able that Michigan does not have a representative in this part of the event.
There is plenty of other rugby to be played. Once again there is an open competition bracket of teams. Hamilton HS will play their two Saturday games against this set of teams. They will then face off on Sunday against a finisher from among the top tier, getting experience against both tiers of competition. Organizers appear to be leaning into flexibility and responding to coach's feedback. (Side note: Hamilton has built a robust spring schedule of 15's having added friendlies with CMH, Hononegah, Illinois, and Midwest in addition to some 7's)
The series of JV-level matches continues as well, a key feature of the developmental mission of the event. Grandville HS will play DSHA's JV team and does not appear set to face CMH or Hamilton's a-squads.
The full schedules is posted on the Midwest Youth Rugby Site. Stay tuned for schedule updates and scores. The championship match will be played at 1pm.
Side note: DSHA traveled to Iowa last weekend to play the Hawkettes and players from Nebraska in 15's. Kudos to all the coaches for continuing this spring friendly and including girls from Nebraska.
