National Girls Championships: Division I

Scores from the National Girls Championship Tournament at the SCORe Soccer Complex in Racine, Wisconsin:

Division 1 Quarterfinals Saturday May 18th
     The opening round of the D1 tournament featured four impressive matches.  As a tournament at this level should be, every match was competitive and with the exception of the 1 v 8 match, one could see how any of the matches could have gone either way. 

(#1) Fallbrook 41  Danville (#8) 0
     Danville came out and almost scored in the first minutes of the match, featuring the blistering pace of their standout fullback and their dynamic running #9, but Fallbrook's skill and experience were unmatched.  Danville showed they can compete at this level.

(#4) Catholic Memorial 12  (#5) Summitt 5
     Summitt slowed the game down well and with the short halves it proved effective for the first 22 minutes.  Memorial got rolling in the second half and scored two tries.

(#2) DSHA 22  (#7) Sacramento 12
     The young but very talented Amazons took on the Wisconsin powerhouse team in a match-up both coaches have wanted to see happen for over a decade.  In a match worthy of a final, DSHA's fast start coupled with a strong finish helped them overcome a very talented team.  The Amazons look like a potential championship team in the making.

(#3) Kent 10 (#6) West Carroll 7
     Two physical teams slugged it out for the full 45 minutes.  With a senior laden team, West Carroll pushed the eventual finalists but Kent just wouldn't crack.

     Fallbrook proved unbeatable in every match they played.

DSHA 20  Kent 22: 
     The Dashers passed up a field goal attempt in the closing minutes and took the quick tap instead, which ultimately they were unable to convert into the points they needed.  A long intercept try from Kent's #13 Asinate Servei helped them upend the #2 seed in the tournament.  DSHA played a lot of offense but couldn't finish enough against a tough defense.

Wisconsin Selectside Announcement

Hello everyone,

First, this was not an easy decision and I appreciate all the time and effort everyone put into the process.  There was alot of interest and a great representation from the majority of WI teams.  As a result, 7 of the 9 WI teams will be represented on this year's WI Select Side roster.  I and the other coaches are excited to see what this group will be able to do.  If you have any questions about the tryout and selection process or future of the program, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Rugby Mag Rankings

For years now, Rugby Mag has published rankings and summaries of girls rugby.  Some of the rankings, in particular, appear a little uninformed.  In fairness to any rankings, few have seen all these teams compete in person, so it's very tough to be accurate.  In fact, ranking high school and youth teams in general makes us uneasy as there's a lot of turnover among teams and a wide range of competitive depth in different conferences. 

     Watching the rugby played in the Midwest Semifinals, our field reporter was struck by how competitive these matches were.  DSHA was clearly the best team and a deserved champion.  There success runs nationally, as it's not just Midwest teams they've dominated for the last 15 years.  Sometimes it seems other teams in our territory are penalized for this.  There are certainly a lot of teams and strong programs throughout the Midwest, and this year's semifinals, in particular, were impressive.  In the last 10 years DSHA has only ever lost to four high school programs, and three of those are Midwest teams (CMHS, KM, and Lakewood), all while participating in every National and Midwest Tournament ever held.

     Armstrong impressed a great deal along the way, finishing off a tough St Joe's team, who is on a similar level as Lakewood this year.  Armstrong played DSHA to a 12-0 scoreline for the first half of their match, before DSHA wore them down in the second half.  Armstrong, in our opinion, could even move up into the top 8, especially now that they can finally get outside more as they were still facing snow as little as two weeks ago.  They should be able to improve a lot over the next three weeks.  Armstrong could find themselves ranked even higher in some other rankings after finishing third at Midwest.

     The Midwest in 2013 stacks up as follows: DS (1), CMH (2), Armstrong (3), Lakewood (4)  and St Joe's very close at 5.  Lakewood probably drops out of the top ten in our opinion, replaced by Armstrong, who had a more impressive win over St Joe's.  Lakewood, although still an impressive squad, lost to Parma, Ohio (10-15) in addition to St Joseph's and a Canadian team at the Ohio Classic.  Parma combined with Amherst, Ohio to compete in the second tier at Midwest.

  A few other notes ... Fullerton, California should not be ranked with high school teams.  They run a u-18 program and several of their best players graduated high school the year before.  Their league allows them to compete, but they are not eligible to play in the high school national tournament; thus, they aren't considered here.  The Amazons recently defeated Danville 25-17 in the playoffs to secure their ranking.

Collegiate Championships Live TODAY

The USA Rugby Collegiate Women's Championship Semifinals take place today.  They are being webcast live at the link below.

Penn State plays Navy today at 2pm.  Catholic Memorial alumni Katie Mueller is a freshman starting at lock for the Nittany Lions.

Stanford and Norwich are also playing today in the other semifinal

In the D2 Collegiate Women's semifinals, Winona St plays Quinnipiac.  Another Wisconsin Girls Rugby alumn, Katie Dries, also from Catholic Memorial, is a flyhalf for Winona St in Minnesota. 

U of Buffalo plays Washington St. in the other D2 semifinal at 12pm
