I am by no means a rugby "no-it-all", just a Mom on the sidelines for the past year at DSHA...and although this team is wonderful recognition for the girls playing this sport...I can't help but wonder, "where is Lauren Franzen?" Lauren is the consumate rugby player..a leader on the field and the best in her position. No tournament team could be complete without her!

Good question.. who makes these decisions? There are four, independent selectors who are invited from the Milwaukee rugby community. These selectors give thier time and experience to watch all the games and make the final all-tournament team.

By design, the selectors are completely independent of all team affiliations and are invited based on the coaches' mutual respect for the selectors rugby knowledge/expereince. I know that they take the task very serously and that there are very close calls in coming up with a final roster.

Also, this shouldn't be taken as an "All-State" team, as the selection is based only on players' performance during 1 match, and not based on all season performance.

Thanks for the comment.

I don't understand how this mom can expect her opinion to be taken seriously? Obviously she is going to think that Lauren is the "best"...she a is a DS fan. The girls selected to the team deserve it and if any of the selection is based on sportsmanship it is clear why Lauren did not make the cut.

Anonymous rugby mom needs to take into account that just because these teams are not in first place it doesn't mean they lack talent. Dan's response explains it in great detail. "Thanks Dan."
Read the blog and see how the teams add up. DS has the advantage on everyone because they have the numbers to choose from. There are other reasons to take into account too. I was at the state tournament and I personally wasn't too impressed with the way DS played!
The high tackles and fake injury time outs got old real quick. As soon as they started to struggle... "a fake ankle injury" or a little frustration... "high tackle" It's a fact and you can't deny it. We have it on disc.
The following statement might be a little harsh but it's true in my eyes.
I saw some good rugby played at the tournament and some classy teams. Too bad DS wasn't one of them.
