2017 Girls HS Rugby National Tournament

2017 Girls High School National Invitational Championships
Nov 10th, 2017

The 18th Annual High School Girls Rugby National Invitational Championships will take place the weekend of May 19th -21st, 2017 at the Moose Rugby Grounds in Elkhart, Indiana.

This year’s event features school and club brackets at one location, with club teams competing on Friday-Saturday and single school teams competing on Saturday-Sunday.

The Moose Rugby Grounds, home of the Penn HS boys and girls rugby programs, is one of the premier rugby-specific facilities in the United States, having hosted the Boys National Invitational Championships on multiple occasions as well as having over a decade of experience as the home of the Midwest Girls and Boys Championship and All-Star events, regularly hosting an average of 170 matches a year.  With three professionally maintained grass match fields and additional practice field space, the Moose regularly hosts tournaments with 40+ teams.

As part of the invitational tournament process, teams are asked to complete an online registration.  Club team applications will be available Nov 25th.  School team applications are available now.  All teams are asked to use a hotel booking service to ensure their attendance.

The 2016 National Invitational Tournaments saw ground-breaking expansion as twenty-four programs competed in division one and division two single school championship brackets as well as a ten-team club championship.  Organizers anticipate multiple brackets of both school and club competition this year.

National Girls (School) Coaches Committee Chair John Klein commented that “the national girls’ tournament has never been stronger as more and more competitive high school girls teams continue to develop.”

Full details of the girls’ national tournament events are in the process of being planned.  Inquiries should be directed to members of the National Girls Single School or National Girls (Club) Coaches Committees until full event packets are published.

A few notes:

-This marked the first time in school history that St Joseph's Academy from Ohio had ever defeated DSHA.  It is their first-ever national championship.   They completed an impressive run through a tough bracket.

-The support of collegiate women's rugby programs was readily apparent as Lindenwood University Women's Rugby provided support and facilities for the historic event.  Collegiate coaches were on site recruiting from Life University, Penn State University, Notre Dame College, Quinnipiac University, Sacred Heart University, Brown, Harvard, and Wayne State.

-Club teams, all from the west plus Morris representing the east, competed at Central Washington University over the same weekend with Sacramento winning their third national title over Fallbrook, whose streak of five consecutive titles ends.

Girls High School Rugby Nationals 2016 (updated April 9th)

The 2016 Girls High School Rugby National Tournament will bring together competitors from at least nine different states at the historic May 20th-22nd event held at Lindenwood University's Hunter C Stadium in St Charles, MO.   Although this is the 17th Annual National Tournament, this is the first ever championship to include single school brackets.

"We are thrilled to host the Girls High School Rugby Championship.  When we were approached with the opportunity to support girls rugby at our University and the growth at this level, it was a no brainer. The competition will give more students a chance to see some of the top facilities in the Nation and the support our University has for the sport. Our hopes are to continue to open student-athletes and families eyes to opportunities that are available at the next level,"  said Coach Billy Nicholas of Lindenwood University.

In a reflection of the significant growth in girls high school teams across the country, nine of the competing teams did not compete at last year's event.  Seven of these programs have never competed at the annual National High School Girls Tournament before 2016, which first began with a six team competition in 2000.
"Bringing more teams together to compete at this level is what it's all about.  The competition at a national tournament is a great challenge and still, at its heart, this is always developmental at the same time.  The experience these young women take back from playing diverse teams and styles from coast to coast is what makes a national tournament a yearly once-in-a lifetime competition," said John Klein, chair of the grassroots organizing committee.
"This expansion to offer a single school competition is the next logical step in the growth of the game," said  John Waliszewski of the organizing committee, which brings together teams from the South, West, East, and Midwest.
There will be two tiers of competitive brackets plus a third festival or b-side bracket, which features GHSAA asst. coach Anna Kunkel's own team from Kansas City.
Organizers remain open to adding competitors should teams be looking to attend this historic high school event.
Ohio's Hudson expressed excitement over being invited to compete and just confirmed funding and travel plans.  Idaho's Capitol, an inner city single school team,  has also expressed an interest in competing.   "We keep finding more and more competitive single school teams as word spreads," added Klein.
"Looking at the big picture, we're looking at 20 high school age teams, maybe more, all competing across the country if you include eight club teams from the parallel event.  The national tournament has never been stronger,"  commented Klein.
