Midwest Championship 2023 & Girls National Tournament 2023

The 2023 Midwest Girls Championships is shaping up to once again be both competitive and filled with teams in a variety of brackets.  This may be the largest all-girls tournament in the country and is one of the few tournaments that can boast a healthy JV-Level 15's bracket.  A central location within driving distance for a good number of teams no doubt adds to the event size.

The MW Girls Championships take place April 29th and 30th on three grass fields at the Moose Rugby Grounds facility in Elkhart, Indiana.  The boys event takes place one weekend later at the same facility.  Any girls teams interested in competing in the top tier should communicate their interest at the link below.

I.The top tier is expected to feature a diverse mix of states and champions from across the Midwest:

Indiana:      Likely 2 from *Carrol, Penn or Warsaw (fresh off playing 15s in the fall Michigan league)

Michigan:   State champions ^Sparta Rock along with rival Grandville HS are expected to compete

Ohio:          Includes *St Joseph's Academy, plus possibly Brunswick, Highland, Mentor, or Watkins?

II.The JV tier has 4 teams registered and offers young players a chance to play young 15s sides:

III. The Open Bracket includes: (other teams are expected to be added over the next few months)

Ft Wayne (IN)

Perrysburg (OH)

A historic win for the Chargers as they take a commanding lead of their conference.  This would be the first conference title for the Hamilton program.  Memorial moves on to a big match with Kettle Moraine/Brookfield to end the regular season.  The winner has a chance to continue competing against the top tier of teams in the state semifinals.

DSHA 76 SPASH 0

The Dashers run out big winners against a competitive Stevens Point side who will look to advance to the state semifinals against Hamilton in two weeks time.

The young Dashers continue their impressive streak behind a big day from their freshman #9, who scored multiple tries and converted several kicks.  DSHA JV is prohibited from playing against DSHA varsity in playoffs.  If not for that, what would their chances have been at winning a top tier medal this year?

Opening Weekend of WGR 2022

 Saturday Sept 17th

10am Nashotah Park:  Brookfield-Kettle Moraine Co-Op    vs    Madison

Will be interesting to see how the merging of league President Betsy Wendelberger's team along with VP Joe Garcia's Brookfield squad progresses.  Madison has an early road test as they carry the flag for girls rugby in the state capitol.  Will Madison take a step towards the upper-echelon of the competition this season?

10am Dretzka Park:     DSHA HS JV vs Hamilton HS

An early start for the young guns from DSHA against a senior-laden Hamilton team.  Where will Hamilton HS go this season after competing at the single school national tournament for the first team back in May?

11am Scray Hill Park:   Green Bay Banshees vs Muskego HS

Two young squads face off for an early barometer of their progress.  Muskego might very well have more playing numbers while Green Bay in their 2nd year in full conference play has some young athletes who've progressed through their flag program.

11am  Pulaski vs Stevens Point Area HS

An early face off of northern teams.  SPASH has had a larger roster in recent seasons and will be interesting to see if that starts to pay off for them in conference competition.  Pulaski is the first of two teams now in the growing rugby hub of Green Bay and its direct vicinity.

Bye Week:  DSHA HS varsity and Catholic Memorial HS

Stay tuned for results and early conference standings.

WGR Fall 2022 Season Around the Corner

The Fall 2022 Season is around the corner.  Teams have ramped up practices.

A few scrimmages have occurred notably DSHA's JV side took on Muskego on Friday Aug 26th in a scrimmage.  Both teams, with strong numbers, were able to score a few tries.  DSHA's JV appears poised for a strong season with several players with experience returning.  Muskego as well showed improved with a year under their belt after reforming last season as a school supported program under Nina Rouse, an assistant athletic director at Muskego HS.

Pre-Season Matches take place Sept 9-10th, 2022 and include some cross-conference matchups:

Hamilton hosts Madison 10:00am Nashotah Park

Hamilton hosts Muskego 11:15am Nashotah Park

(followed by the Oconomowoc Women's Match at 1pm)

*Others will be added as times confirmed

WGR Conference Alignment 2022-2023

Wisconsin Girls Rugby, sources tell us, has settled on conference alignment for the upcoming Fall 2022 Girls High School Rugby State Championship season.  Featuring five teams in each conference, the season culminates in a semifinal round followed by the WGR State Tournament on Oct 30th at the Milwaukee County Sports Complex.

The WGR State Tournament sees each conference team play to determine their final state ranking.

The Jeff Noe Conference:

DSHA HS, Green Bay, Muskego HS, Pulaski, Stevens Point Area HS

The Tony Oliver Conference:

Catholic Memorial HS, DSHA JV, Hamilton HS, Kettle Moraine/Brookfield Co-Op, Madison

Conference Notes:

Tony Oliver coached the Highland (Homestead HS) team along with later founding the Oak Creek HS Girls team, where his younger daughter played rugby.  Born in South Africa, he was tragically killed riding his bicycle one early Sunday morning.

After playing last fall together as a co-op team, the Pulaski and Green Bay programs are playing as their own clubs, which is how they both started.  With multiple high schools over 1000 students in the vicinity, hopes are high that rugby can continue to appeal to the many student-athletes in the area (GB Preble, GW East, and Pulaski HS all have over 1000 students in addition to the smaller GB SW high school)

Muskego is in its 2nd season after a hiatus of several years.  As a school-supported program they have the potential to bring in strong participation numbers.

Several teams are looking to schedule additional JV matches which is an encouraging sign for the overall growth and health of the league.

The Kettle Moraine (Knightmares) along with Brookfield Bruisers are combining for the fall season due to low numbers.  Administrators are hopeful these two long-standing programs can improve their drawing power in the area.

The format of the Semi Final weekend on Oct 20th is TBD at this time. Organizers are unsure of returning to the Cottage Grove rugby facility for a tournament style semifinal event.

Final Team Ranking for the Fall 2021 WGR Season (15's)*

1 Catholic Memorial

2 DSHA

3 Hamilton

4 Green Bay/Pulaski Co-Op

5 Brookfield (tie)

5 Stevens Point (tie)

7 DSHA JV

8 Kettle Moraine

9 Muskego

10 Madison

*Spring 2023 results would see DSHA retake the top ranking, having won the National Championship.

1st American to Captain Trinity University

Genevieve Ruesch, a DSHA class of 2017 alumni, recently completed her career and degree at Trinity University in Dublin, Ireland.   In addition to being a regular starter at scrumhalf at Trinity, the #9 with an incredible pass became the first American to captain the successful Irish university team.  While Ruesch was a heavily recruited high school player during her time at DSHA she chose to pursue her literary and educational goals oversees and was able to continue her successful rugby career at the same time.

The first picture below captures her the second time she became a National Champion, granted her most recent is in a different country.  Her first was with DSHA in 2017 when she led her team to victory over Kahuku HS at the Girls Single-School National Tournament.  Her university side pictured below recently won the National Irish Touch Championship.  It's an idea we hear she's interested in promoting in the States as well. Lakefront 7s 2022

The Lakefront 7s has boasted a strong high school girls bracket the last two years and this year offered some nice variety of teams throughout the Midwest.

This year, Michigan's Sparta Rock defeated Hamilton from Wisconsin in the final 50-0.

Also competing were teams the Badger Select girls program, the Carrol Chargers of Indiana, Madison Furies, and the Chiefs of Illinois.

WGR HS Selects Defeat Minnesota Selects in 15's Rugby

On Saturday June 18th, the Wisconsin Girls Rugby HS All Stars, coached by Jeff Noe traveled north to compete against Minnesota's select program.  Playing 15s on a perfectly sunny and 62 degree Saturday, the girls won 60-21.  Congrats to all the players who made the commitment to represent their state and to offer our northern neighbors an opportunity to learn and play more 15's.  Every girl who attended played and contributed.  For those unfamiliar with Coach Noe, he is one of the best and most experienced coaches in the Midwest having coached with Kettle Moraine girls, the USA u20s, Midwest select programs, and the NSCRO 7s All Stars, in addition to Winona St men's rugby.

Many thanks for Rugby Minnesota for playing 15's in an effort to get more kids playing.  Much of their league has shrunk the last few years and several teams have been playing 10s.

The "Trophy" is uniquely Midwest:

u23 Midwest Side Includes WGR Alumni

The Midwest u23 squad, drawing players from colleges and clubs throughout a wide array of states, includes a number of WGR alumni this summer.

The team includes young athletes who have taken a variety of paths to continue playing.  One is a college freshman in an NCAA varsity Division 1 program, another is ending a long career at a non-NCAA scholarship program and another played club rugby in college and with an adult women's club.  Congrats to each on their success!

2022 WGR 7s Season Concludes

The 2022 Spring Wisconsin Girls Rugby Spring 7s series concluded this past weekend with Hamilton HS emerging as the series champions in both the D1 and D2 (developmental) brackets.

Congrats to all the student-athletes and coaches from across the state who participated.  It's great to see so many young athletes playing.

Hamilton High School (10-1-1) tied with Brookfield (10-1-1) over the course of the three tournaments.  Following a tournament series point-system, Hamilton won the tie breaker to take 1st place.

Green Bay finished third with a 6-4-2 record.

Hamiltons JV1 team won the 2nd division (developmental) trophy with an 11-1 record over the three tournaments.

WGR Class of 22 Varsity Collegiate Committments

While the class of 2021 ws a big year for NCAA varsity college scholarship athletes from WGR, the Class of 2022 is much smaller, highlighting perhaps how some teams like DSHA, CMHS, and Hamilton have smaller senior classes than some other years.

The only WGR letter of intent in this year's class is also the first WGR athlete to attend Bowdoin College in Massachusetts.

Katie Stomma     Catholic Memorial High School        Bowdoin College (NCAA NIRA Div. 3)

Stay tuned as there may be another announcement or two at the end of the school year.

Girls High School Rugby National Tournament: Single School Historical Records

A few historical notes:

--DSHA won their 9th National Championship in 2022

--Despite playing many times over two decades this is the first time DSHA and Summit HS (CO) had met in the National Championship match. They are two of the oldest programs in the country.

--DSHA is the only team in the country to appear at every National Tournament.

--Eagle HS became the first Idaho team to medal.  This was their first appearance at Nationals.

--While Orchard Park has appeared several times in D1, this is their first appearance in D2 and first title in D2.

--This was the first Nationals held in Ohio and three local teams competed.

--This was the first appearance for multiple teams:  Eagle, Wando, Hamilton, Watkins, and Highland.  They each won at least one match.

Event Notes:

--In addition to being well-coached and talented, one theme that rang true for most of the D1 teams is that teams are also young.  Here's a breakdown of how many seniors were starters for each team:

    DSHA (3)

    Summit (5)

    Eagle, CMH, Hamilton (4)

    Wando (7)

     Grandville (only 1)

While graduating seniors are always difficult to replace, most of the D1 teams have the majority of their starters returning which has to be exciting for the future growth of girls rugby.
