Midwest HS Girls Championships 2022

The 23rd Annual MW HS Girls 15s Championships take place this weekend.

It is one of the GREAT challenges in rugby:  State Champions and Runners-up from across the Midwest, in three grueling and demanding games in one weekend on professionally groomed, full-sized fields.  No short fields here.  No narrow fields here.  Full on rugby from sideline to sideline.  A champion at this level is a champ at another level of character, teamwork, fitness and skill.  It's also a venue where the young competitors of the future get to square off in JV matches against one another in a preview of things to come.  Good luck to all competitors.

Midwest HS Girls Rugby Championships 2022

For over twenty years, girls high school teams throughout the Midwest have come together to compete in a two-day tournament.  Held mostly in the central location of Elkhart, Indiana at the Moose Rugby Grounds, the event hosts multiple brackets of competitors in a girls-only event that's among the largest girls events of the year.

The 2022 tournament returns to its traditional three match, two day Saturday-Sunday format, after a pandemic-enforced shortened one-day version last year.

This year marks the first year that two Michigan teams compete in the Championship Bracket, with a third in the Open Division.  While a decade ago, there were as many as four Michigan teams that would travel and compete, the growth of Michigan girls teams both in terms of numbers and strength continues to add to an already-competitive event.

The top tier features:

Brunswick (OH)

Carmel HS (IN)

Carrol HS (IN)

Catholic Memorial HS (WI)

Divine Savior Holy Angels HS (WI)

Grandville HS (MI)

Highland HS (OH)

Sparta Rock (MI)

The D1 Quarterfinals will see

CMHS vs Carmel

Brunswick vs Sparta Rock

DSHA vs Grandville

Carrol vs Highland

The Open and JV teams competing include

Berkley (MI)

Perrysburg (OH)

Ft Wayne (IN)

15s Rugby Re-Emerges in Iowa

After a dozen years, 15's girls high school rugby was played in Iowa once more.

Around 2007-2010 there were some small but hardy attempts to play high school girls rugby 15s in the Iowa area.  Each spring they'd host a wonderful tournament that drew from Kansas City to Minnesota to Wisconsin.   One year Katie Johnson came down as a 16 year old to play with her Dad's Hopkins, MN team.  Now a current USA 15s Eagle and 7s Olympian, KJ led her team as 10 back in high school.

This event comes to mind as the highly successful Iowa Hawkettes 7s selectside made a shift this spring into girls 15s as well.  Earlier this month they'd traveled to play a Missouri team and came out victors.

This weekend DSHA took their varsity and jv sides down to Iowa for their first spring run-out.  By all account Coach McDowell and Coach Klein were happy with a competitive match that offered benefits for both teams in two well-reffed matches.

No experience is needed!   This is for beginners as well as girls considering transitioning from flag rugby or other sports over to high school contact rugby.  Campers will learn passing, attack, kicking, as well an introduction to contact on pads.  Campers should bring cleats (soccer work fine), mouth guards, and a water bottle.
