The Spring Thaw and some girls scores

Last week saw a slew of pre-season girls rugby scrimmages cancelled due to snow and ice covered fields.  As temps finally hit close to 50 for the first time this year, league organizers are beginning to feel a little more optimistic about the opening round of matches next weekend.

WGR Sunday April 7th:
Muskego v Fond Du Lac  1pm
Oak Creek v Vernon 12pm
Kettle Moraine v Menomonee Falls 12pm
Brookfield and CMHS @St Louis Ruggerfest

Other parts of the country have been more lucky.  Some noteable girls scores from around the country show that things are in full swing in the warmer parts of the country:

3/23  And Earlier NorCal
3/23 Danville 19 Amazons 7 (NorCal)
A huge victory for the newer Danville girls team played on the stadium turf field in front of 300 fans.   Bishop O'Dowd  53 Mother Lode 10
Amazons 34 Dixon 12
Fallbrook 63 Dixon 12
Fullerton v Dixon:  no score reported yet ...
2/2 B.O.D. 20 Dixon 17

3/3  Budd Bay 14  Kent 22:  Kent maintains their grip on Washington's division and state title, but Budd Bay gave them a closer match than they have in many years.

3/23 Fullerton Invitational Youth Tournament:
Fallbrook 34  Kent 0:  (unconfirmed, but if this was indeed a shortened match of one 25 minute period, one has to wonder if this was a developmental side from Kent or a statement from the pre-season #1 team)

Fullerton 17  Kent 0:  Another California team notching a big win.  Reports continue to cloud where Fullerton should fit in.  Reports claim they used players out of high school in their u19 program last season.

Fullerton 0  Fallbrook 15:  Fallbrook won the championship of the Fullerton Invite on Fullerton's home turf.

Kent 17 Carson Graham 3:  Kent wins the 3rd Place match.

Las Vegas Invite (back in February)
Minn Tundra 22 Snow Canyon 17:
Some reports decribed MT as a lot of Armstrong girls and some other MN players added in to the mix.
Fallbrook  41 Wild Rose (Canada) 14
Minn Tundra 17 Wild Rose 15

Midwest Girls Championships

The Midwest Girls Rugby Championships are just a month away as they take place Saturday and Sunday April 27th and 28th.

The event is held at the Moose Rugby Grounds: 1500 County Road 6, West Elkhart, Indiana, 46514.

Some info can be found at www.Midwestyouthrugby.com.

To register, a team must:

1) Include the local-hosts (Bart Barthoff) and the Midwest Youth Coord. (Bob Cronquist) in a confirmation email with your intent to compete in the girls Midwest Championships.  Please do so by April 11th.

2) Please indicate the division you intend to compete in.  Brackets will be determined by the Midwest Youth Coord. with input from state reps.  We are able to have three divisions of games, if there is enough interest:  Championship, a second division, and a B-side Bracket.  We have room to include many girls teams that have an interest in competing.

3) Bring a check to the event made out to "Moose Rugby Grounds"  $350 for Championship bracket, otherwise $300.

4) Please secure your hotel rooms with the service provided as soon as able.  Teams must use the link below to compete in the event.  This is part of a sports tracking process by the city.  This is a very good things for rugby-you must use the link if you wish to compete in the event.  Cindy is able to get you a better deal than you would as individual teams.  You may also call CIndy below if you prefer a hostel not the link.

5) If you've already made your hotel accommodations, please contact Cindy with the info to help her track the rugby #'s generated.  She may still be able to help with a better deal.

Thank you

Bart

Editors Note:

This year's event looks to be strong, with several strong programs and states returning to the competition.

In addition to last year's finalists, DSHA and Catholic Memorial, the third-place finisher, St Joseph's Academy represents Ohio.  Ohio's Lakewood has chosen not to participate for the second year in a row.  4th Place finisher Kettle Moraine returns after advancing past Vernon in the Wisconsin state championship tournament.

Minnesota's Armstrong, a three-time state champion, returns to compete after a short hiatus and will add another competitive team to the mix.  All the above listed teams have applied for invites to the National tournament and will be fighting to move up in one of 3 divisions.

Illinois also looks to return to the higher competitive bracket with Plainfield on the upswing.

Wisconsin will be sending a slew of teams looking to experience cross-border competition as Vernon, Oak Creek, and possibly Brookfield all look to compete in the second division.
