The James Foley Memorial Tournament May 1st, 2021

UPDATE:

CMHS 0  DSHA 7  (15's match, full time)   Great match.  More scores later.

It's time once again for Catholic Memorial's annual James Foley Memorial Tournament.  Played in honor of the former Marquette University rugby player and independent journalist murdered by ISIS in August of 2014, the tournament focuses on the core values of rugby:  teamwork, comradery, moral character, hard work, fun, and toughness.

As Foley once said“There’s physical courage, but that’s nothing compared to moral courage. If I don’t have that moral courage, we don’t have journalism.”

A heavy dose of rain hampered morning matches, but the top notch rugby-only pitches at the Moose Rugby Grounds in Elkhart, Indiana held up beautifully.  As the afternoon cleared up, so did the matches.

While at least half the size of past tournaments, this was a big step in getting teams and kids playing again.  A late start allowed teams to drive in Saturday morning if needed.  For some teams like DSHA, this was their first game since Fall of 2019.  Most teams involved have seen their league schedules delayed or outright cancelled.  Many thanks to the Midwest Referee Society for support as well as that of the Midwest Youth Coodinator, Bob Cronquist..

Midwest Girls Rugby Tournament 2021

This upcoming Saturday three Wisconsin teams are headed to the Moose Rugby Grounds to compete against some of the other top programs in the Midwest.

The Top tier features perennial State Champs, DSHA as well as perennial finalists Catholic Memorial HS facing off against Penn HS (on their home field) and Carroll HS.  Carroll girls have been building a strong team for the last few years, as shown in their strong numbers (they continue to field a full JV side as well).  Carrol won state championships in 2018 and 2019.  Penn won the most recent of their three state titles in 2017 and have competed at Midwest almost every year.

In the open division, Wisconsin's Brookfield Bruisers are in a pool with Warsaw and Ft Wayne.  Most years Warsaw has played in the top tier including multiple appearances at the National Girls Tournament.  The most recent of their two state titles came in 2016.  Brookfield was most recently back in action, being shutout in a 15s primer against CMHS in a good showing last Friday.

The depth of girls rugby and this event can be seen in the fielding of multiple JV sides.  Nice to see young players getting the opportunity to compete against other younger players.

Elkhart, Indiana welcomes a good number of varsity and club collegiate coaches to the event.  While the number of coaches attending has dramatically increased the last few years, this year organizers are expecting even more attending than usual due to the unusual last twelve months and the lack of other big rugby events or game film.

Stay tuned here for any late schedule changes.  Results will be posted here after the event.
