WGR Week 4 Schedule 2021

During the summer planning for the Fall 2021 Wisconsin Girls Rugby League, organizers were concerned about the effects of the Covid Pandemic impacting the upcoming school year.  In order to build in flexibility, teams planned a league-wide bye-week for Oct 2nd.   This allowed teams with quarantine issues to have an open date to reschedule matches.  The bye week also helps teams rebuilding from lost seasons and with small rosters, giving them a chance to recover before the end of the league season and playoffs.

The wisdom of this planning is already being shown, with one match being rescheduled for this week.  Another team with a small roster had to forfeit over the weekend, and this reprieve will hopefully help them prepare to compete in week five.

Girls Single School Nationals 2022

The National Girls Coaches Committee has been hard at work planning the restart of girls nationals, which first began efforts in 1999.

The event will be held on the traditional 3rd weekend in May, May 21st and 22nd with matches Saturday and Sunday.

Committee members are hard at work to see if Notre Dame College in Ohio will host at their varsity women's team's facilities.   Additional interest has been shown from MLR, either for 2022 or for 2023 and beyond.

Organizers hope to settle venue and host sometime in November, in order to help teams plan and fundraise for the event.

There will be two brackets of competition, a top tier of championship competitors and a 2nd tier for developing, newer, or smaller programs wishing to compete against squads from other states.

Please contact wisconsingirlsrugby@gmail.com with any questions or inquiries regarding girls nationals.

WGR Alumni Square off in NCAA D1 Matchup

Several WGR graduates squared off in the NCAA Division 1 Women's Rugby matchup featuring Sacred Heart at Brown University on Sat. Sept 18th, 2021.

Of particular note was that both starting flyhalfs are recent WGR alumni, with SHU freshman Aly Cunningham competing against (instead of with) her old Catholic Memorial-teammate Emme Ohnmacht, now also a freshman at Brown.

Skills matter, not just size, and in seeing these young players continue to excel, we hope it's a reminder to all our current WGR players where skills and smarts can take you.  Ohnmacht and Cunningham aren't the first WGR alumni to excel at the NCAA level or the first to play flyhallf.  Numerous alumni have played the 'quarterback' or 'point guard' positions in rugby, 9 and 10, at the NCAA level.

Both Lindsey Wise (DSHA) a decade ago, and more recently Allison Koenig (CMHS), a senior, filled the #10 jersey for Quinnipiac University.  Sophomore Lexi Haskins (CMHS) is Quinnipiac's starting scrumhalf this fall.  WGR has a long tradition of skillful halves.  Maybe just as interesting may be to ask who might be the next one?

Of note also was sophomore McKenzie Youngblood (DSHA) and sophomore Stephanie Wilson (CMHS) playing 8 and 6 for SHU in this matchup after starting as centers their freshman year.  Enjoy the match.  It's nice to see the high quality HD on offer with this recording.
