Several WGR graduates squared off in the NCAA Division 1 Women's Rugby matchup featuring Sacred Heart at Brown University on Sat. Sept 18th, 2021.
Of particular note was that both starting flyhalfs are recent WGR alumni, with SHU freshman Aly Cunningham competing against (instead of with) her old Catholic Memorial-teammate Emme Ohnmacht, now also a freshman at Brown.
Skills matter, not just size, and in seeing these young players continue to excel, we hope it's a reminder to all our current WGR players where skills and smarts can take you. Ohnmacht and Cunningham aren't the first WGR alumni to excel at the NCAA level or the first to play flyhallf. Numerous alumni have played the 'quarterback' or 'point guard' positions in rugby, 9 and 10, at the NCAA level.
Both Lindsey Wise (DSHA) a decade ago, and more recently Allison Koenig (CMHS), a senior, filled the #10 jersey for Quinnipiac University. Sophomore Lexi Haskins (CMHS) is Quinnipiac's starting scrumhalf this fall. WGR has a long tradition of skillful halves. Maybe just as interesting may be to ask who might be the next one?
Of note also was sophomore McKenzie Youngblood (DSHA) and sophomore Stephanie Wilson (CMHS) playing 8 and 6 for SHU in this matchup after starting as centers their freshman year. Enjoy the match. It's nice to see the high quality HD on offer with this recording.
