15s Rugby Re-Emerges in Iowa

After a dozen years, 15's girls high school rugby was played in Iowa once more.

Around 2007-2010 there were some small but hardy attempts to play high school girls rugby 15s in the Iowa area.  Each spring they'd host a wonderful tournament that drew from Kansas City to Minnesota to Wisconsin.   One year Katie Johnson came down as a 16 year old to play with her Dad's Hopkins, MN team.  Now a current USA 15s Eagle and 7s Olympian, KJ led her team as 10 back in high school.

This event comes to mind as the highly successful Iowa Hawkettes 7s selectside made a shift this spring into girls 15s as well.  Earlier this month they'd traveled to play a Missouri team and came out victors.

This weekend DSHA took their varsity and jv sides down to Iowa for their first spring run-out.  By all account Coach McDowell and Coach Klein were happy with a competitive match that offered benefits for both teams in two well-reffed matches.
