2022 WGR 7s Season Concludes

The 2022 Spring Wisconsin Girls Rugby Spring 7s series concluded this past weekend with Hamilton HS emerging as the series champions in both the D1 and D2 (developmental) brackets.

Congrats to all the student-athletes and coaches from across the state who participated.  It's great to see so many young athletes playing.

Hamilton High School (10-1-1) tied with Brookfield (10-1-1) over the course of the three tournaments.  Following a tournament series point-system, Hamilton won the tie breaker to take 1st place.

Green Bay finished third with a 6-4-2 record.

Hamiltons JV1 team won the 2nd division (developmental) trophy with an 11-1 record over the three tournaments.

How does Hamilton with only 9 wins and 2 losses become season champions when the Brookfield Bruisers had 11 wins and only 1 loss and these two teams split regular season match ups 1 win and 1 loss each.
Hamilton lost to the Bruisers in Pulaski and they lost to Madison at Stevens Point.

If the WGR doesn't look into this I would be a complete disrespect to the team that actually took the championship this year. The Brookfield Bruisers!

It will be interesting to see how the final results for the season are posted by the WGR. As the Hamilton team walked off the pitch in Stevens Point, mid-tournament mind you, and accepting their second loss of the season to the Madtown Furies, almost every spectator was amazed and disgusted with the move by the Hamilton coach. Apparently, Hamilton RFC didn't want to lose to the Bruisers in the cup match up again.

Some commentary from league president Wendelberger in regards to your post.

"On the day in question (regarding the forfeit), Hamilton had already played four games and passed on the opportunity to play for that day’s cup final- giving that opportunity to the next best team of the day which was SPASH. Again, this game did not count toward the series and I saw this as an act of great sportsmanship from Hamilton"

It is not in dispute that Hamilton won 10 games. In fact, they were tied neck in neck with Bruisers with a total of 12 games played, 10 of which were wins, 1 of which was a loss (to each other), and one of which was a draw. The resulting outcome was that each team had a total of 52 “super rugby points” as indicated in the TP column. Super rugby points are calculated as 4 points for a win, 2 points for a draw, and 0 points for a loss. Bonus points are awarded for each game in which a team scores 4 or more tries, or loses by 7 or less. As the two teams tied at 52, we had to go to the tie breakers, all of which are outlined in the league bylaws. First tie breaker is head to head competition.

With Bruisers and Hamilton each winning one against each other in the series, that was a tie so we went to tie breaker number 2 which was win total. As outlined, that was also a tie at 10 each. Tie breaker number 3 is point differential, which is where Hamilton pulled ahead.

I think it says a lot about the two teams, and the series as a whole, that we had to go down to the third tie breaker. I have complemented both coaches on this effort and I know both team’s coaches have commented that it was a great series and have a great deal of love and respect for one another.

I take pride in the fact that this league is all very friendly with each other and we all celebrate each other’s success. Kudos to both teams on a great season!

I am happy to elaborate on any of the details of the individual events, as well as the series as a whole if needed. Feel free to contact me directly via private message, or via email at WendelbergerE@gmail.com.
