Girls High School Rugby Nationals Records & Notes 2024

Nationals Notes:

Congratulations to Eagle High School.  It's their first National Championship and the first National Champion from Idaho, which has seen high school girls rugby growing strong in a short amount of time.

Congrats to Eagle HS for also logging the most miles:  3,360 (approximately).  Meridian was a close runner-up at 3,354.  We used their school as the location.

11 of our 14 sides were able to drive to this year's event.

City Honors logged 1,352 miles in vans while Columbia logged 1,324 miles, some driving through the night to attend.

This event would not be a national tournament without such incredible efforts, helping teams compete against teams they'd never otherwise see.

There were 21 matches played and only one of those was a match where two teams had played each other earlier this spring.

Three JV teams participated, going 4-5, offering more well-coached participants to the event.

This was the first event to feature teams from Illinois.  Congrats to Hononegah HS and Taft HS for their efforts to broaden their horizons with competition.

T-Shirts will still be available online for another week.  This helps fund an event website project.

Mark May 17th-18th, 2025 on your calendars for next year's event.

Girls High School Rugby National Tournament: Single School Historical Records

A few historical notes:

--DSHA won their 9th National Championship in 2022

--Despite playing many times over two decades this is the first time DSHA and Summit HS (CO) had met in the National Championship match. They are two of the oldest programs in the country.

--DSHA is the only team in the country to appear at every National Tournament.

--Eagle HS became the first Idaho team to medal.  This was their first appearance at Nationals.

--While Orchard Park has appeared several times in D1, this is their first appearance in D2 and first title in D2.

--This was the first Nationals held in Ohio and three local teams competed.

--This was the first appearance for multiple teams:  Eagle, Wando, Hamilton, Watkins, and Highland.  They each won at least one match.

Event Notes:

--In addition to being well-coached and talented, one theme that rang true for most of the D1 teams is that teams are also young.  Here's a breakdown of how many seniors were starters for each team:

    DSHA (3)

    Summit (5)

    Eagle, CMH, Hamilton (4)

    Wando (7)

     Grandville (only 1)

While graduating seniors are always difficult to replace, most of the D1 teams have the majority of their starters returning which has to be exciting for the future growth of girls rugby.

Girls HS Rugby National Tournament 2022 (Full Press Release) & Historical Records

The 22nd Annual Girls High School Rugby National Tournament for single school programs will take place the weekend of May 21st-22nd, 2022 at Notre Dame College in Ohio.

"Notre Dame College, who's women's rugby team finished 3rd in the NCR Women's National Collegiate championships this past fall, is excited to host the GHSNC here close to Cleveland, Ohio on our beautiful campus. We have hosted many events in the past such as the Rugby Ohio State championships along with many youth, high school, and college tournaments,” said Jason Fox, NDC Director of Rugby.

Fox added, “The NDC administration has been extremely supportive of all levels of rugby in the area.  Along with Jack Nece, women's head coach , our teams are looking forward to working with all the athletes and coaches that attend."

The women’s collegiate program will host matches on Mueller Field and Normandy Field.

NGCC schools chair John Klein noted, “Bringing the national tournament to another new location is important to the girls rugby community, especially when it helps bring in new competitors.  We are encouraged whenever rugby can help rugby at different levels and are thankful for the program at NDC for hosting all these girls teams. They’ve planned this for going on three years and are ready to put on an excellent event.”

Single School teams will compete in a quarterfinal and semifinal Saturday May 21st with final matches Sunday May 22nd.  Developing programs are encouraged to compete against teams they might not normally ever compete against.  Organizers are once again planning multiple brackets of competition; an eight-team division one competition, along with an eight-team second division.  Planners are considering a JV Bracket pending interest.

Organizers are encouraged by the expectation of renewed participation from Colorado in addition to single school hotbeds throughout the Midwest and South.  Organizers have already been working with new programs from the East and West coast.   “Having teams represent different territories makes this tournament a National event,” noted Klein.

Questions regarding registration and policies should be directed to National Coaches Committee member John Waliszewski.  Venue and city information should be directed to Jason Fox at NDC.
