Wisconsin State Champions

The 13th Wisconsin High School Girls Rugby State Championship, and the 6th State Tournament conluded Sunday and saw Divine Svior Holy Angels High School win their 12th State Championship.  It's a remarkable record of excellence hardly ever accomplished in any sport.  Congratulations on acheiving a record of excellence that spans more than a decade.  Congrats to all the girls and coach Klein and his entire staff of coaches:  Boris Turcinovic, Kathryn Maloney, Erin Coogan, and Marie Haas.  Your current freshman were probably all toddlers when you won your first State Championship!  While we at WGR aren't saying you're old, you have, we shall say, longevity.

Other records of note include Catholic Memorial becoming the second team to make back-to-back finals, and Kettle Moraine's success speaks for itself as they've finished in the top three of a very competitive state for three consecutive years.

2012 State Tournament Results

Sunday, Oct 28th ended another remarkable year in Wisconsin Girls Rugby: a slate of drama-filled games, record attendance, and the end of an era.

After a long weekend of rugby,  we wanted to note a few highlights on the day, and only wish we had time for a more detailed recap of the matches:

-Wisconsin Girls Rugby's League Coordinator, Jeff Noe, oversaw his last State Tournament today, in addition to coaching his last game after ten years with the Kettle Moraine girls.  Some days, i just don't know how Coach Noe did it all ... playing Division I rugby for the Milwaukee Harlequins and the Milwaukee Barbarians, being league administrator, heading-up the state tournament, reffing boys high school matches, working as team manager for the USA u20 Women's National team, and coaching an outstanding KM girls program.  After coaching hundreds of girls over the years, the least WGR could do was present him with a nice plaque at the trophy presentation to commemorate his volunteer efforts.  Thanks Noe.  You will be missed.

We also wanted to highlight a comment from one of your girls posted the other day, as it sums up who you are better than any of us on the WGR staff could:

"Noe! I was looking at this blog before our 3rd place game like I do before a lot of games and I saw a letter to all of the players and fans about the state tournament. I was really touched by the effort and attitude section, so I copied it to show to the team. Then, I scrolled down and saw that you wrote it! This honestly didn't suprise me. Everything that you do for the team and Wisconsin rugby reflects the words that you posted in the letter. You have taught me and the girls so much and I will never forget all that you have done. You will always be a member of the Knightmares, no matter where you go. -Libby Schubert, Knightmares :)"

-For the record, Kettle Moraine pulled off one of the upsets of the day as they defeated Vernon 10-5 to win the 3rd Place Match and Wisconsin's third seed to the Midwest Championship.  A long try-line stand defined the heart and emotion with which the KM girls played.  It was also an effort displayed by a tough Vernon team that has a lot to be proud of after a nice, winning season.

-The championship match was a tight first-half battle that kept the crowd and both sidelines on their feet.  CMHS controlled the match in the opening first-half, but found themselves down 5-0 at the halftime break after some great continuity by the Dashers.  DSHA made some halftime adjustments and scored in the first five-minutes of the second-half to take control of the match.  Phenomenol defensive pressure from the Dashers probably turned the tide of the match in their favor.  Congrats to DSHA on a well-earned Championship and some excellent rugby!

-The fifth place match saw Oak Creek pull off another upset on the day, as they unseated the higher-ranked Brookfield/Tosa side 24-0.  An earlier 15-5 conference match gave an indication that this would be a good matchup, and the ensuing rematch did not disappoint.  Both teams gained alot from their experience against top teams and it was an entertaining match.

-In the 7th/8th Place match Menomonee Falls lost to DSHA's JV side 53-10.

-Fond Du Lac played Oak Creek's Jv side in a high-scoring match of 10's.

A Letter to our Student Athletes, Parents, and Coaches

from the inside cover of the 2012 State Tournament Program, available on gameday:

Dear rugby players, families, and friends,

Thank you for coming out to support Wisconsin Girls High School Rugby as we celebrate out sixth annual end of season tournament. Wisconsin is known as one of the best leagues for high school girls in the nation as many of the programs have represented the state in Midwest and National tournaments. No other state can claim anywhere near the six different teams Wisconsin has sent to Nationals as well as always finishing fifth or higher in the tournament. This is representative of the talent, and quality of rugby played in Wisconsin as well as the effort and commitment needed by all the teams to compete in an extremely tough league.

Rugby for me is about realizing what you can control and what you cannot. We cannot control the weather. We cannot control the referee. Both of those things must be dealt with by each team. What we can control is our effort and our attitude. We must strive as a league and rugby community to promote a positive attitude that looks to fix mistakes, encourage our teammates, and continue to work together against the opposition. It is the players’ effort and approach to adversity allows them to be successful and deliver their best performance. But it is never a perfect performance and how a team responds to those challenges and setbacks, with a positive attitude and effort, is what can create something memorable.

The crowd needs to remember this as well. Our focus should be on encouraging players to dust themselves off after a missed tackle, or praise an extra effort that results in a turnover. There should be respect for all the teams and the referees that are out competing on the final day of the season.

Thank you again for celebrating our Sixth Annual State Tournament. I hope you will all join me in showing respect, encouragement, and celebration to all the teams and referees after the tremendous amount of work dedicated to a season of rugby. I am looking forward to watching several competitive rugby matches that will mark the conclusion of a great fall rugby season.

Cheers,

Jeff Noe
WI High School Girls Rugby Coordinator

7th Place Match:  Menomonee Falls v Fond Du Lac  10am (field one)

JV Match:  DSHA JV v Oak Creek JV 10am (field two)

Sunday's State Championship Tournament is just around the corner.  While we await official confirmation from league offices on the tie breaker between Oak Creek and Falls for the 5th place match against Brookfield, it appears everything else is set.  An unofficial perusal of the scores shows that Oak Creek probably has the edge; they scored more tries and were only shutout once.
(Update:  WGR officials have confirmed that Oak Creek will be the fifth seed in Sunday's playoff, based on the third tie breaker, points differential)

While it may appear a repeat of last year, in that the 1st and 3rd place matches feature the same matchups, the storylines are far more interesting than the same old reruns on tv.  In the title match, we have two teams who retooled themselves after losing 17 and 9 seniors, respectively and their teams flourished.  There will be a lot of exciting new faces on the field as they renew their great rivalry.  Changes in the DSHA coaching staff continue to bring new ideas and change to their program and the depth provided by a great JV team have made their game even more dynamic.  Memorial, too, looks to gain from the experience they've gained both last year and in the opportunity to play a top team in the country twice in the fall.

The 3rd place match features a resurgent Vernon team that will be looking to cap off a strong season with a medal finish. With a young team that struggled in a tough league last year, they've shown what sticking together as a team and perseverance can do.  Kettle Moraine is also looking to close out an emotional year, as it's their coach's last match after ten years with the program.  Battling low numbers all season, their success in this match might depend on how healthy they pulled out of their match with DS last week.

Week 7 scores

Thursday Oct 18th
DSHA 54  Kettle Moraine 17
On a cold, rainy evening at Dretzka park, the Dashers finished off an undefeated fall conference title, their tenth in a row.  Kettle Moraine scored more against their cross-town rival than they have in a long time.

Saturday Oct 20th
Vernon 0  Catholic Memorial 17
Memorial became only the second team in WGR history to make two consecutive finals with a shutout victory over the Harlequins in Vernon.  The result was in doubt for much of the game as both sides battled back and forth.  Vernon had a scoring opportunity in the first half, but their field goal attempt went astray.  A fierce nine-minute try-line stand that went up until halftime, might have been the sequence of the match; Memorial held their ground and the game was tied at half.  In the second half, the Crusaders wore down Vernon and put in three tries to advance to the finals.

Sunday Oct 21st
Oak Creek 17  Menomonee Falls 17

Divine Savior Holy Angels 7-0
Catholic Memorial 6-1
Vernon 5-2
Kettle Moraine 4-3

Week 7 Preview

It's a big weekend for girls and women's rugby in Wisconsin.  The final week of the regular season.

Thursday Oct 18th
DSHA (6-0) v Kettle Moraine (4-2) 4:45pm  Dretzka Park
Regardless of who wins, DS will win the conference championship and play in the finals.  KM will play in the 3rd place State match for a bid to the Midwest Championships. Nonetheless, it's Coach Noe's last regular season game coaching KM, so there should be plenty of emotion involved.

Saturday Oct 20th
Vernon (5-1) v Catholic Memorial (5-1) 10am Vernon Town Hall Park
---The game of the week---
The schedule really worked out this year, as this matchup is essentially the semifinal playoff game that would've occured had there been another week of playoffs, as in the past.  The winner plays DSHA in the state final.  The loser faces KM for 3rd.  The game of the week should be a great matchup of two strong teams.  The teams have some comparable scorelines, but that's always iffy to to use as a barometer.  Vernon tends to score less points with their style, but they are very effective with it.  Vernon lost to conference champs DS 46-8, while CMH lost to DS 27-7.

Sunday Oct 21st
Brookfield v Fond Du Lac 1pm Brookfield Christian School
Brookfield/Tosa looks to get their 3rd conference victory of the season.

Menomonee Falls v Oak Creek 12pm  Thomas Jefferson/Hiawatha
Falls has defeated Oak Creek the last two years in the division ii final.  It's always been a close rivalry and both teams will be eager to show they've improved over the course of the last two months of rugby.  Oak Creek might have more student-athletes on their roster.

Other Women's Rugby:
Saturday 11am and 1pm
The Midwest Women's D2 Playoffs are taking place at the Milwaukee County Sport Complex.

In collegiate women's rugby, UW-Milwaukee hosts Iowa St.

If anyone know's the exact matchups and location info that we don;t have yet ... place post the info in the comments section, our staff reporters are busy covering high school rugby this week!

Philippine Women's 7's Results

Picture
Lady Volcanoes' performance earns invitation to the 2013 Hong Kong Sevens

The Philippine National Women’s 7s team travelled to Pune India to compete in the 2012 Asian Women’s 7s Championships which was also the qualifying tournament for the 2013 Women’s Rugby World Cup.

After trekking 21 hours via Clark Airport, Bangkok and Mumbai the team arrived in Pune India on Thursday, Oct 4. The Lady Volcanoes had only trained together for a week leading up to the Asian Championships. The Philippines came up against the 2nd-ranked China in their first game and this was a hard opening game as the Chinese National Women’s team are all full-time professional athletes. The Philippines tried hard to break through the strong Chinese defense but were eventually worn down by their opponents who ran out winners by 29 – 0. Despite the loss, this was a vast improvement against the top ranked Asian team considering the last time the Philippines came against China, they went down by 56 – 0.

The second game of day 1 saw the Philippines come up against their South East Asian counterparts, Thailand which proved to be a tough encounter for the newly-formed Philippine team with Thailand capitalizing on some basic mistakes by the Philippines to run out winners by 24 – 7. These two loses placed the Lady Volcanoes in the B Division of the tournament with the top eight countries competing for the Cup and Plate and the next eight countries competing for the Bowl and Shield trophies.
Picture
The hard games on day 1 proved to solidify the Filipinas' resolve and they came out determined to win the Bowl Division trophy and claim the 9th spot at the Asian Women’s 7s Championships.

The Iran Women’s team had beaten the more favored India team on Day 1 and were looking strong coming into the semi final against the Philippines. Team Philippines pumped up for a physical encounter and Cassie Umali led the way with her courageous tackles which were well supported by Ada Milby who made some strong inroads into the Iranian defense. Finally, it was the Philippines structure and game plan that won the game with Marisol Linsteadt and Lelaine Martin both scoring tries to seal a comfortable win by 24 – 5.

The win placed the Philippines up against Sri Lanka in the Bowl Division final with the winner taking out the B Division of the Asian Women’s 7s championships. Sri Lanka were physically bigger and had more pace than the Philippines and coach Matt Cullen explained that possession and passion were the two main ingredients required to upset Sri Lanka in the Bowl Final.

The Philippines came out firing and again stuck to the structure that had proved successful in the win against Iran. Leilani Martin proved to be a handful for the Sri Lankan defense and constantly made ground as she drew in defenders to set up attacking raids for the Philippines. It was Co-Captain Aiumi Ono from the VisMin Rugby Club in Cebu who showed her natural talent when she split the Sri Lankan defense and scored under the posts to take an early lead. Aiumi then pulled off a great try-saving tackle to snuff out the only attacking raid that Sri Lanka had during in the first half. The Philippines then set about controlling possession in the second half and they did this with skill and enthusiasm and ran in another three tries to take out the Bowl Trophy and B Division Championships by 24 – 7.

This placing sets the Philippines up for an invite to the world famous Hong Kong Sevens International Tournament in March 2013. Coach Matt Cullen is confident that this young National Women’s team can improve on this ranking and equal the great feats of the Volcano men’s teams. He stated that the Women’s 7s program had only started in 2010 and did not enter a team in the Asian Championships in 2011. “They have already shown they can match it with the top teams in Asia. Winning the B Division at these championships will see the National Women’s 7s team win an invite to the Hong Kong 7s next March. If the team can attend more International Tournaments like this, then they will only improve to match it with the top teams in Asia”

Fiji emerged as the Cup Champions with China and Japan who all won spots to attend the Women’s 7s Rugby World Cup in 2013.

Week 5 Scores

Wed Oct 3rd
Oak Creek 34  Muskego 17
The Oak Creek Knights played a young Muskego team in a try-filled weekday match and were able to notch a non-conference victory.

Saturday Oct 6th
DSHA 46  Vernon 8
DSHA moved to 5-0 after defeating the previously undefeated Harlequins at their home pitch.  After getting out to a quick 10-0 lead, Vernon fought back with a 10-phase barrage and were awarded a penalty, that their kicker hit, for the three points.  It appeared Vernon might be able to keep it close until some turnovers were converted to more points for DSHA, as they broke the game open.  Vernon was able to add a try near the end of a match in which they continued to battle hard.  The Dasher's senior captain, Emily Van Bibber, scored two tries and hit three conversions in the winning effort.

CMHS (win) over Menomonee Falls (forfeit)

DSHA JV 17  CMHS 22
Both referee's at the field Saturday commented that this was the best 'jv' game they may have ever seen.  Featuring a highly-skilled attack, both teams played with width, at times; kicked at times, and competed at the breakdown effectively.  After at least three lead changes in a fun match, Memorial freshman winger Ellie Metz scored the decisive try late in the second half.

Sunday Oct 7th
Brookfield 15  Kettle Moraine 33
KM notched the road victory at Brookfield Christian School.

Broookfield 29  Muskego 17
Another competitive match, that went the home team's way in the end.

Fond Du Lac 15 v Oak Creek 40
Oak Creek rounded out a good week by continuing to find the tryzone.  Fond Du Lac did too, touching down three times.

Week 5 Preview

The fifth week  of the conference season is upon us:

Oct 6th
10am Vernon v DSHA   Vernon Town Hall Park
The game of the week.  The two remaining undefeated teams in the conference.  The winner has a good chance to win the conference.  History has been on DSHA's side so far.  Vernon has never defeated DSHA.

1130am DSHA jv v CMHS Vernon Town Hall Park
This should be a strong test for a very good DSHA JV team that also remains undefeated.

Oct 7th
12pm Oak Creek v Fond Du Lac
One of these teams will come away with their first victory of their season.  Their perseverance in continuing to play matches is paying off for their young teams.

130pm Brookfield v Kettle Moraine Brookfield Christian School
After a rocky start, Brookfield/Tosa has steadied the ship and gotten two teams to play as one.  They look like a different team now and continue to make strides.  Kettle Moraine got off to a slow start against Vernon and will be looking to rekindle their mojo.
